Effective Planning

The FAAC Group's 50 years of business leads them to head towards even more ambitious aims and increasingly more significant results. With 75 patents, more than 2400 staff worldwide, and 80 distributors, the Italian company leads the way with a plethora of automation products. FAAC Simply Automatic provides automation for gates and barriers, entrances and automatic doors, engines for rolling shutters and screens, car parks and access control.

The only mainstream Australian manufacturer of quality automatic gate drive systems is Gate Drive Systems (GDS) Australia. GDS lead the way by using Industrial grade, cast iron gearboxes and motors suited for the most rigorous applications. Their motors boast class-leading features such as 100% duty cycle, variable speed ramp up and ramp down, fast opening speeds, adjustable opening and closing speeds and more.

Gate motors explained:

Gate motors are a complex part of any project, and are oftentimes not given due attention and time to really pick the right gate motor (operator) for the right project. There are multiple aspects of a gate that need to be assessed in order to choose the most appropriate operator for your client's application. These include:

  • DUTY CYCLE:
  • Duty cycle refers to the amount of operations a motor will undertake per hour, in a worst case scenario. For example, if your client has 100 staff that all enter in a morning rush period over the space of an hour, and the site is required to maintain security, then the gate motor will be in a state of constant operation for that hour period. Even if the rest of the day it barely functions until the afternoon rush, a high duty-cycle motor will be required. If a standard duty-cycle motor is provided it will simply over-heat, which will then put the motor into a protection mode and shut-down until cooled down, which will mean no access in or out until the motor cools.

So why not just use high duty-cycle motors on all gates then? This is a case of the old adage of "you get what you pay for"; high duty-cycle motors are often very expensive, to the effect of double or more a standard motor. So knowing the intimate details of your Client's access requirements is paramount for tendering so no one is left out of pocket.

For example, a 9m sliding gate with a 70% duty cycle will only allow a gate to undergo approximately 30 operations per hour.

  • SIZE:
  • The size of a gate often determines the weight of the gate, and the heavier the gate the larger the operator required. With swing gates, wind is often a factor for the strength of the motor required, and the longer the leaf the more force on the motor when closing with any wind. It is also recommended not to place any signage on swing gates, as these create wind sails that increase resistance by a large amount.

  • INTENDED USE:
  • Will the gate simply open in the morning and close in the afternoon, or is high security required whereas the gate will open and close with every vehicle? This ties in with duty cycle, and determines how many operations per day an operator will undertake, and thus affect what motor is required.

  • SPECIFICATIONS:
  • Certain client's will have specifications and requirements for the gates installed, so while a certain motor may be perfectly capable of operating a gate, a client may require high-speed operation (sch as Police station's and Ambulance depot's). Other client's such as Goodman may stipulate cast iron gear-boxes on sliding gates, which is an area GDS excel with their motors.

  • NOTE:
  • For safety reasons P&C Fencing do not recommend pedestrian traffic to traverse vehicle gate openings.

    STANDARD INCLUSIONS:

    REMOTES:

    Why choose Us?

2 x standard white remotes included with all motors.

Please note; typical remote range is 10-15 meters. If longer range is required, please notify our Sales Team at time of tendering. Existing steel and concrete structures, as well as wireless networks, can interfere with the effective range of remote controls.

    PHOTO-ELECTRIC (PE) SAFETY BEAMS:

    Why choose Us?

Photo-Electric (PE) safety beams are infra-red beams that cross the driveway portion of a gate's operation to prevent the gate closing on a vehicle or pedestrian. Dual height PE beams included with all truck entry gates.

Single height PE beams included with car entry gates.

    OPTIONAL EXTRA'S:

    INDUCTION LOOPS:

    Why choose Us?

Induction loops are cut into a driveway to allow the automatic opening of gates upon a vehicle exiting. They are available to cover a distance of up to a maximum of 12m, larger exits may require multiple loops.

    TIMER (7 Day):

    Why choose Us?

Timers allow a gate to open at a pre-programmed time, and then close again in the same fashion. 7 day timers are the most common timer, and are programmed for a standard 7 day week (Monday - Sunday), and will trigger the gates each day as programmed irrespective of public holidays and daylight savings

(i.e. Monday-Friday open at 6am, close at 5pm. Saturday open at 8am, close at 1pm. Sunday do not open).

    TIMER (365 Day):

    Why choose Us?

365 day timers work in the same way as a 7 day timer except an entire year is pre-programmed to allow for holidays, daylight savings, etc. This is an extensive and time consuming process so these timers are more expensive than a 7 day timer. In addition, they require re-programming yearly, so feasibility of on-going programming is to be considered when choosing this timer.

    KEYPADS:

    Why choose Us?

Keypads are numerical pads that allow the creation of four-digit unique codes for entry through a gate for up to 1000 users.

    PEDESTALS:

    Why choose Us?

Dual height Pedestal's are suitable for truck entry gates.

Single height Pedestal's are suited to car entry gates.

    SWIPE CARDS:

    Why choose Us?

Swipe cards are commonly used for larger company's with higher staff numbers as a cheap alternative for secure access where a gate is required to close after each vehicle.

    SWIPE FOB'S:

    Why choose Us?

FOB token's are a small, more modern version of a Swipe Card with the same functionality. They are more expensive than a Swipe Card due to the size.

    FLASHING LIGHTS:

    Why choose Us?

Flashing lights are commonly used for Government facilities such as Transport NSW depots, where visual aids are required to notify personnel of moving gates.

    AUDIBLE ALARM:

    Why choose Us?

Audible alarms are commonly used for Government facilities such as Transport NSW depots, where audible aids are required to notify personnel of moving gates.

    PUSH-TO-EXIT:

    Why choose Us?

Push-to-exit buttons are commonly used in Dock Offices or Reception areas to allow easy opening and closing of gates over large distances. Remote Controls are only useable to approximately 20 meters.

    KEY SWITCH:

    Why choose Us?

Key Switches are a switch operating off a physical key being inserted and turned to trigger a gate opening. These are particular useful for access by emergency services, such as Fire Brigade/RFS, as the key cylinder can be replaced to a 003 key which is the universal access cylinder for emergency services. This will save the gate being rammed for access in the event of fire, should an emergency release not be fitted in the Access Control system.

    TRAFFIC LIGHTS:

    Why choose Us?

Gate traffic light systems are a simple red/green, stop/go two-light system that enable control of traffic during a gate's open and close stage to avoid vehicles "racing" a gate and potentially colliding with the gate, causing damage to both the gate and the motor.

    SAFETY FENCE:

    Why choose Us?

Safety fences are an optional additional safety item used behind sliding gates to prevent pedestrian collision with the moving gate. These are required on sliding gates within school grounds, and useful in other areas where a risk assessment could determine a reasonable risk that pedestrian traffic could collide with the gate. PE safety beams only cover the driveway portion of a gate's movement, not the rear of the gate.
